Our CSR policy at the service of your event
Minimise your event's carbon footprint with us
Measurement of the event
Measuring the carbon footprint is a crucial stage in the organisation of an event. It enables the organiser to gain a better understanding of the environmental footprint of the event and to identify the areas on which to focus in order to reduce emissions.
To help you, the Monaco Tourism and Convention Board has set up a carbon calculator to calculate the estimated impact of your event.
Transport
Transport can quickly become the biggest item in your carbon footprint. However, there are ways of reducing the impact of transporting your participants to Monaco.
Train
This is the best option if your departure point is less than 4 hours from Monaco. As well as the usual scheduled services, the French National Railways Company (SNCF) is offering event organisers the chance to use its "Events" service to privatise all or part of a train so that participants can travel non-stop to the Principality. From the Monaco-Monte-Carlo train station, it's less than 10 minutes walking distance to the Place du Casino.
By plane
Opt for direct flights and prefer airlines that use sustainable fuels for long journeys. The Nice Côte d'Azur airport is France's 2nd largest airport after Paris, with 111 direct destinations including the main European cities. There are up to 86 flights a week between Paris and Nice, 40 flights between London and Nice and 30 flights between Geneva and Nice. So, for most of your guests, there's no need to book flights with stopovers or charter extra flights. By choosing direct flights, you save around 50% more CO2.
Did you know? If the four billion passengers each year lightened their bags by 100 grams before boarding, 50,000 tons of fuel would be saved every year - the equivalent of 1000 Paris/Bombay flights! It is therefore important to encourage your guests to reduce the weight of their luggage by 20%.
Transfers between Nice airport and Monaco
The "Zou! Express 80" bus line offers a direct service to Monaco with low CO2 emissions.
By train, Monaco can be reached in 30 minutes, with 40 trains a day. With our partners, it is also possible to carry out your transfers using a private fleet of electric or hybrid buses.
Travel within the city
Monaco is the 2nd smallest country in the world with less than 2 sq. km, the size of Central Park! Walking is made much easier and encouraged with 80 lifts, 37 escalators, 8 travelators and the following applications: “Monapass”, which concentrates all the mobility passes on the phone, and “Citymapper”, which offers real-time itineraries combining the Principality's various environmentally friendly means of transport, such as bicycles, buses and electric taxis.
At the same time, the proximity of our Group's establishments offers you event solutions within our two historic and seaside centres, where everything can be done on foot. This means we can offer you a 100% transport-free event.
Venues for your event
When it comes to choosing a destination, accommodation, meeting or banqueting venue for your event, we recommend that you choose certified venues that meet a number of rigorous criteria to ensure their CSR commitments. They consider environmental, social and societal issues in their activities and in their relations with stakeholders.
8 Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer Group establishments are Green Globe certified. This internationally recognised certification is based on more than 350 criteria relating to the environmental, social and societal commitment of the establishments, a compliance which is verified each year by audit.
Within our Group, all four of our hotels have been awarded Green Globe certification. The Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort and the Monte-Carlo Beach have been awarded Green Globe Platinum, rewarding establishments that have been certified for more than 10 years. The Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo and the Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo are Green Globe Gold certified, with consecutive certification for more than 5 years. The Café de Paris Monte-Carlo brasserie was the first restaurant in the world to be certified under Green Globe standard.
Environmental policy
The Principality of Monaco's historic commitment to sustainable development has taken on a new dimension since the accession of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco which has placed the environment and sustainable development issues at the top of the Monegasque State's policy priorities, both nationally and internationally. To date, the Principality has set itself the target of reducing greenhouse gases by 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The Monegasque Government is also pursuing an active policy to reduce plastic waste, with a target of "Zero single-use plastic waste by 2030".
This approach has been closely followed by our Group, which has been a pioneer in raising awareness of the impact of energy consumption, notably by introducing innovative technologies such as ocean thermal energy as early as 1963, which transforms 1Kw into 4Kw using energy from the sea to provide electricity for all the heating and air conditioning systems in our establishments.
Our commitment has enabled us to observe tangible actions and results, such as:
- Several hundred tons of products collected;
- 34% reduction in water consumption and 69% reduction in gas consumption over 15 years;
- 100% of our gas consumption is carbon offset;
- 100% of paper purchased is eco-labelled;
- 99.6% of electricity under Certified Renewable Origin contracts;
- Preservation of biodiversity, in particular with the creation of a reef seawall to protect the beach and allow marine fauna to thrive, as well as the creation of a 20,000 sq. m LPO (League for the Protection of Birds) refuge at Monte-Carlo Beach;
- Installation of 1,000 sq. m of photovoltaic panels on the roof of the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort.
By selecting Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer, you will be choosing hotels with the lowest carbon emissions per night.
Monaco is one of only 17 countries in the world where each overnight stay emits between 1.4 and 9.4 kg of CO2. In Europe, only France, Spain, England, Denmark, Norway and Finland are doing as well.
Social policy
As the Principality's largest employer, our Group relies on the talents of men and women in more than 130 different professions and operates in a context where employee health and safety are major concerns, as are diversity and non-discrimination within our teams.
Every year, we take several practical steps to help our employees:
- Ongoing training to develop know-how and interpersonal skills;
- Indexation of wages to the cost of living to preserve purchasing power;
- Guarantee good working conditions, in particular by providing quality equipment and working tools, as well as accommodation for seasonal workers;
- Adaptation of schedules in the catering sector, limiting shift work;
- Development of partial teleworking within the company, for jobs that allow it.
Societal policy
Our Group is committed to supporting jobs and regional development, with almost 33% of its turnover dedicated to purchasing, using more than 2900 suppliers, including more than 600 companies located in the Principality of Monaco and almost 1800 in France, making Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer a major economic actor.
We are also heavily involved in the Principality's cultural, artistic and sporting life, taking part in numerous artistic events - symposia, exhibitions and shows - thus contributing to the dynamism that characterises the Principality of Monaco. In particular, the Group provides financial support for the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Ballets de Monte-Carlo. The Group is also a partner in major sporting competitions through partnerships with the Automobile Club de Monaco, AS Monaco Football Club, or through its involvement in the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters tennis tournament.
The history of Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer has always been linked to charity work in the Principality, which includes organising gala evenings for associations such as the Bal de la Rose or the Croix Rouge Gala.
Our Group is also a partner in events linked to its CSR policy, such as the Sustainable Gastronomy Summit initiated by Chef Alain Ducasse
Wherever possible, it also seeks to encourage the collection and recycling of products by associations, such as soaps, corks and uniforms. Group employees take part in charity initiatives such as :
- ‘No Finish Line’ for Children & Future, which raises €1 for disadvantaged or sick children for every kilometre run. 230 people took part in 2023 and 9460 km were covered by employees;
- Annual collection of toys donated by employees in aid of Restos du Coeur. 3000 families in the region benefited in 2023 with a Group contribution of 34 boxes, each measuring around 1 cubic metre.
Food and Beverage
Responsible catering is a natural part of our restaurants' kitchens, thanks to our chefs who promote healthy, local and authentic cuisine using fresh, seasonal produce.
This approach has been part of our group's DNA for many decades, notably through Chef Alain Ducasse who, in 1987, put a 100% vegetable menu on the menu of his 3* Louis XV Alain Ducasse restaurant, promoting local produce and reducing animal proteins.
Urban agriculture is one of the solutions we are developing, with a 400 sq. m vegetable garden at the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort and a 200 sq. m garden at the Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo. Our group's ambition is to exceed the threshold of 10% of our needs covered by this local production.
For your breakfasts, banquets and coffee breaks, we offer a wide range of responsible options, including:
- Service on the plate to avoid waste;
- Menus prepared with products from short and/or organic circuits within a radius of less than 150 km around Monaco or from our own production: honey, fruit and vegetables as well as pastries, bread and chocolates. 100% made in-house by our talented teams;
- Options for discovering local specialities;
- Menus without animal proteins and/or red meat;
- Complete use of a product, avoiding waste;
- No use of frozen products;
- Use of seafood products from sustainable fisheries, supported by the Mr. Goodfish approach, of which 14 of the Group's restaurants are signatories;
- Local alternatives for your drinks (wine from Provence, beer from Monaco, aperitifs such as Gin from the Monaco distillery, Limoncello from Menton, Pastis and Rum from Nice, etc.) as well as the use of filtered bottled water.
Many other options are available for all your Food & Beverage services.
Meetings
To help you better control the ecological impact of your meetings and seminars, we have also introduced several practical measures:
- All our room supplies are environmentally friendly: non-toxic erasable boards and markers, recycled paper and pens, etc.
- During meetings we use glass bottles with filtered water to limit waste;
- Each room has a waste sorting bin;
- Our printers use recycled paper and are configured to print on both sides of the paper;
- All our rooms are equipped with teleconferencing solutions to facilitate hybrid meetings;
- 95% of our rooms and lounges have natural light, reducing energy costs. Temperature, air conditioning and lighting are managed with precision, according to occupancy, the number of participants and the duration of events. The air conditioning is switched off in unused areas.
Team building activities
We offer a wide range of activities for companies wishing to strengthen their teams' commitment to the environment and society.
It's a unique opportunity to raise participants' awareness of the importance of sustainability, to encourage them to adopt eco-responsible practices, to discover the local heritage and to give them a human experience through charity work.
Among these activities, we can suggest :
- Come and meet the local craftspeople, where you can try your hand at pottery, glassmaking or perfumery in a group. You can also take exclusive tours of our establishments, which boast more than 150 years of history: the legendary Casino de Monte-Carlo and Opéra Garnier de Monte-Carlo, or the world's largest hotel wine cellar, housed in the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, where you can taste some great wines;
- If you're feeling sporty, you can take advantage of the green water sports centre at Monte-Carlo Beach, where you can set off on a paddle, kayak or pedal-boat, or take a walk along the customs path in the nature reserve, accompanied by an LPO guide;
- Thanks to our local partners who specialise in organising responsible team-building events and are ISO 20121 certified, you can enjoy a host of fun and committed activities in Monaco and the surrounding area. For example, you can take part in cookery workshops where your dishes will be served to people in need, you can take part in a charity walking rally where Monaco will be a real game board where you can build up a fund which will be donated to an association, or you can take part in an orienteering challenge in the middle of the forest where, as a team, you will prune, clear and replant new tree species.
Goodies and amenities
To enhance and promote your event while maintaining a responsible approach, we also work with our local partners to help you choose goodies and gifts for your participants.
For example:
- Adopt a coral to help preserve marine ecosystems;
- Sponsor a fish at the Oceanographic Museum in Monaco and contribute directly to funding the “Oceano pour tous” programme;
- Adopt a tree to help reforestation in France. By becoming the sponsor of one of these trees, which will bear your name, you will be able to geolocate it and track the amount of CO2 absorbed, thereby playing an active part in the fight against climate change.
For your VIPs, Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer can create tailor-made chocolates and pastries made locally using organic and fair-trade ingredients. Local fruit baskets, local fruit juice and local wine are also available to complete a responsible experience
Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer does everything in its power to offer you a sustainable experience in its establishments.
